It’s that time of year to look back at 2018’s most newsworthy stories. Let’s start with midcentury modern and midcentury modest kitchens: What did I find:
- Great new/old product revivals and introductions, as the market for midcentury and midcentury-inspired kitchen renovations becomes a “normal” part of the industry rather than a mere “trend” — (Me no likey that word, “trend” – it presumes here today gone tomorrow marketeering. Midcentury modern design was not a novelty, it was not just “stuff” or another years “what’s in/what’s out” barf. At its best it’s an integrated aesthetic, with both philosophical and technological underpinnings. .)
- And, 12 years into blogging about this hyper-targeted topic, I wanna see stuff I’ve never seen before. So, I continued to plumb the more obscure. I’m always getting distracted though. I think that’s also a function 0f 12 years at this. Repita: Show me something I haven’t seen before!
Scrolling through the archive for all our kitchen stories for the year: I quite liked 2018!
My other 9 favorite stories about midcentury kitchen products and designs in 2018:
Dishmaster found the original tooling for vintage faceplates — and reintroduced them — two colors. I love stories like this! | Wilsonart made cracked ice laminate with a high gloss finish available via its Virtual Design Library. They also did this with what I call the “Vitra boomerang laminates.” | Make It Midcentury came for a visit to discuss their glitter laminate line — and ended up with new-and-improvements. |
There’s a new steel kitchen cabinet door company in town — Toro. | I got me a new/old Hurricane in a Box and after some help from automaticwasher friends, it works like a dream! |
I met Ken, who lives not too far from me in Massachusetts — he salvages the best-quality vintage kitchen drainboard sinks he can find, from all over the country, and has dozens to sell. |
People like this — who can see beauty beyond the mainstream — just plain float my boat: Addams Family meets Dick Van Dyke: Nanette, Brian and their three dogs’ long journey to their 1952 house |
And then there are the epic journeys, they always impress me too: Jennifer’s epic journey to add Raymond Loewy-designed kitchen cabinets in her 1948 house |
Just like back in 1978, this Poggenpohl kitchen was epic too. [Thanks to Next Door Photos – Michiana for the great photography!] |
